Summary:
Culture is regarded here as a constructivistically available, process-like dynamic, dscursive holon, systemically structuring and structured in autopoietic bonding with the respective bearers.

The main factor for the development of a new cultural system is a marginal situation of an individual or a group of individuals. This feeling of marginality is often rooted in the reflection of a dominating cultural formations that an individual for certain reasons is not resp. cannot be part of. This leads to a so-called counter identity because a mental identity is required so that you won't vanish without trace in a frightening ocean of insignificance. This is, for example, the case with

- Minority cultures, e.g. the Turkish city communities in Berlin, ghettoized Puerto Ricans in the Bronx (history of the origins of Hip Hop) or tamil-hinduist groups within the surrounding buddhistic society in Sri Lanka, to name just a few. This is also true of

- (Sub)cultures, that emerge when the supply of boundary markers of existing cultural systems does not provide an adolescent collective with satisfying alternatives anymore. In her study of Punk and Hip Hop culture, Stefanie Grimm identifies a "social and cultural vacuum" that in times of sociocultural crises motivates new "impulses". Punk, for examples, was not just based on a break with society but also with the traditions of rock and pop music that at this time (1976) has been established to an extent that it could not be regarded as sub-culture anymore*.

1. Es werden Grenzmarken nach außen gesetzt und

2. Es werden vereinende Strategien nach innen angewendet.

Adolescents that try to distance themselves from the culturall dominating formations of their parents adopt newly developing formations as welcome parallel worlds for their own search for identity and thus become co-constructors and co-bearers of these systems in an autopoietic exchange. The need for shaping a new cultural formatic has two consequential aspects:

1. External borderline markers are established and
2. Unifying internal strategies are applied.

"limitische Struktur".

The collected, newly created and consensually established cultural boundary markers amount to a so-called supply of boundary markers (Mühlmann, 1985**). This can be composed of all kinds of culturally representable modes of expression such as songs, rhythms, dances, poems, prose, drawings, graphics, clothes, movement types, body ornamentation, jewelry, hairstyle, food preparation, modes of dwelling, figures of speech, modes of theater etc. etc. The new cultural formation clearly and distinctively distances itself from the dominating one with these sensually perceivable formative means. It forms a so-called "limiting structure". A spatial projection of such limiting structures are walls of all kinds, the most impressive example perhaps the Great Wall of China. Despite its sturdy character, its function was probably less a protective but a symbolic one with regard to the demarcation of a culturally hegemonial dominion. Declarations and lyrics of sub-culture bearers and bands frequently address the idea of mobilizing "power" out of powerlessness, be it in

The subject of all these is that the others, the whites, the commoners and their represantative instances such as police, army etc. and other dominants indeed have the power of definition but that a culture-related group cohesiveness resp. the creation and continuation of a supply of borderline markers typical for a culture - e.g. the preference for certain parameters associated with music -

- creates an identity-preserving counter strategy

- a compensation strategy to balance forms of human capital (cultural, social and economic capital according to Pierre Bourdieu***) resp. the need to construct a

- counter identity against the cultural systems perceived as dominant, especially if they more or less aggressively articulate an elitist claim of representing the whole.
