2. Definition

The term CYBER itself is of ancient Greek origin and means something like navigating, steering, for example a moving ship. It is a shortform of Cybernetics, which was the title of a book by the American mathematician Norbert Wiener in 1948, where he describes the "Control and Communication in the Animal and the Machine“.

In the 70ies the term CYBER has been the brandname of a high-performance computer of the American Control Data Corporation. From there it spread to science fiction writers and became a used term among them.
The word Cyberspace can be found for the first time in the short story Burning Chrome by William Gibson in 1982. Since then it has become synonym for digital and virtual worlds.
